The Pedagogy of Multimedia Authoring

June 29, 2005 at NECC, Philadelphia

Featuring Dr. Ulises Agüero Arroyo, PhD

Over 300 delegates to the National Educational Computing Conference 2005 heard a very different perspective on education from Dr. Ulises Agüero Arroyo, PhD in Computer Science of the Costa Rican Institute of Technology in Costa Rica. Dr. Agüero is the creator of CREATE Together, which is produced and published by Bytes of Learning.

While many North American educators are familiar with multimedia authoring, few have taken their students or their educational programs beyond making presentations.

Dr. Agüero stresses that multimedia authoring is, “an alternative to making presentations. Multimedia authoring tools should be designed to encourage students to explore concepts that no other medium allows them to explore so effectively.”

Understanding cause and effect relationships is just one example of learning that Dr. Agüero beautifully illustrates with his “love game”, an interactive activity that demonstrates messaging among objects. Based on over 15 years of educational research, Dr. Agüero states that students can not only learn the essential concepts of computing, they can learn how people and other organisms in the world interact.

A complete video recording of Dr. Agüero’s presentation (about 29 minutes) is available here. QuickTime 5 or later is required.
